Donabate Portrane Community Council calls for Moratorium

Postby SPDD » 06 Dec 2018, 18:47

ALL politicians in North County Dublin have been called on to support a call for a moratorium on new construction work in Donabate.

It comes as a key piece of road widening work has been delayed after a contractor carrying out the project had its contract terminated.

Now Donabate Portrane Community Council wants Fingal County Council to call a halt to all new construction work on the peninsula.

It said traffic delays and a chronic infrastructure deficit in the area meant this was the only reasonable course of action.

The call for the moratorium would not affect existing projects, such as house building and the construction of the National Forensic Mental Hospital in Portrane.

TDs and councillors for North County Dublin were called to support the construction moratorium.

The call comes after it was revealed that a desperately-needed widening of the road leading into Donabate to be delayed.

The widening of the narrow road at the railway bridge at Prospect Hill, on the Hearse Road, was a condition attached to the grant of planning permission for the building of the National Forensic Mental Hospital.

Fingal County Council received funding for the works from the HSE.

Planning permission for the forensic mental hospital was granted as far back as the summer of 2015.

It now emerged that Fingal County Council has terminated the contract for the project with Tilbury Construction Ltd.
The council intends to re-tender for it, with works on the site not now due to restart until the first few months of next year.

The Hearse Road is chronically congested, and has a temporary diversion on it. There is a huge amount of construction road traffic in the area, with many 12-wheel vehicles using the narrow roads.

The road network on the peninsula has not been upgraded for generations despite the massive surge in construction activity. This is despite the fact that there is one main road access to the peninsula.

The moratorium on new builds should stay in place until the Hearse Road is widened at Prospect Hill, and the Donabate Distributor Road is completed, Donabate Portrane Community Council said.
SPDD recognises the need for housing and wishes for development in Donabate to be carried out in a sustainable way that enhances and reflects the needs of a growing community. @SPDD17
