Protest over the destruction of hedgerows on New Road

Post by CommunityCouncil » 17 May 2019, 12:55

A protest over the destruction of hedgerows on the New Road in Donabate was organised at short on Thursday evening.

Those attending were livid over the bulldozing of the hedges during the sensitive nesting season.

The protest was organised by Donabate Portrane Community Council.

Donabate Portrane Community Council, along with numerous residents, complained about the clearing of the hedges to Fingal County Council and the Gardaí.

The works were halted on foot of the complaints and after Gardaí turned up at the scene.

The hedgerow destruction works were being carried out as part of the construction of the Donabate Distributor Road.

Yellowhammers, which are red listed, have been observed in the area where the hedge-clearing work was carried out.

Donabate Portrane Community Council has asked Fingal County Council why, if it is necessary to clear hedges, this work was not done outside the nesting season.

Related article here - didn't realise that clearing hedges could be allowed between March-August if a development had the appropriate planning permission. Obviously not good. But is also says there have to be surveys for nesting birds.

What was the response from the Council? Is there permission for what they are doing? Or is it illegal?
